Say “Goodnight, Mommy” (2022)

Synopsis of the Drama Goodnight Mommy

The film Goodnight Mommy is a remake of the same name from Austria. Elias and Lukas, twin boys, are the main characters. They visit their famous mother at her rural estate.

When they arrive, they notice something odd about their mother. She is not only dressed in a medical mask, but she has changed significantly from who she once was.

Her maternal warmth and compassion are vanished. She treats the boys instead in a chilly, distant, and occasionally rather hostile manner.

Elias and Lukas believe their mother is not the woman wearing the mask. Who else could she be if she isn’t their mother, though? Does she intend to damage her kids in any way?

Why is the “mother” hiding her identity?

They are shocked to discover their mother wearing a medical mask when they first get to her house. She adds that she had cosmetic surgery and is wearing the mask while her face heals, which clearly comes as a surprise to them.

It makes sense that their mother, who is a well-known actress, would wish to maintain her attractiveness. There are hints, though, that point to the woman not being their mother after all.

Therefore, it’s possible that cosmetic surgery is only a practical approach to conceal the identity of the potential imposter.

Why do the boys believe that their mother is a fraud?

Their mother gives them certain guidelines soon after they arrive. She warns them not to enter the barn, make noise, or go in her office or bedroom.

Elias and Lukas are wary of these regulations because their mother doesn’t typically impose them.

She declines to sing them the nighttime ballad she used to sing to them when they were younger, which only serves to confirm their fears.

She claims that they are too old for bedtime songs, but the boys don’t believe her since they think she is a phoney who doesn’t know the lyrics.

A picture of the family standing together that Elias gave the masked woman is also destroyed. Given that their mother used to preserve their images, there is another proof that she could not be who she claims to be.

The woman’s eyes are another feature. The boys recall that she had blue eyes, and they discover a photo to support their memory. However, the housemate has a green eye colour!

They discover blood on the barn wall when they subsequently defy the woman’s orders and walk inside. The woman then enters the barn and behaves violently toward them. Once more, this behaviour differs greatly from that of their mother.

The boys flee and take refuge in the barn of a neighbour. However, the boys are returned to their mother’s house when the owner calls the police.

When the police arrive, they are told that the woman residing there is a fake, but when they actually see her, she is not wearing a mask and resembles the mother of the boys in every way.

The woman tells Elias to go to his room, but he stays and hears what she and the cops are saying. She overhears the mother saying, “He must have slipped on some water while playing near the pool.

That boundary between fact and fantasy has disappeared, which is terrible. What exactly do these terms mean? Later in the film, we learn more.

Is the woman the mother of the boys?

The boys still don’t believe the woman when she says she’s their mother; they still believe she’s a stranger who underwent facial reconstruction to resemble their mother.

They duct tape her to her bed while she is dozing off. Elias wakes her awake and drenches her with cold water before asking where their true mother is.

When they query her about the change in the colour of her eyes, she replies that she occasionally wears coloured contact lenses and introduces herself as their mother.

The cops, who had called to see how they were doing, interrupt them. When they inquire as to where their mother is, Elias replies that she has left the house. When they are called to another job, the police leave the lads at home, despite one of them having some doubts about this claim.

Then, Elias and Lukas flee. Elias informs Lukas that he has forgotten his toothbrush before they have travelled very far. He discovers his mother’s coloured contact lenses when he gets home.

He releases the woman after realising that she is his mother. One more mystery needs to be addressed, though. There is someone else in Elias’s life who isn’t who they say they are, even though she isn’t an imposter after all.

Elias discovers what in the barn.

The blood-stained wall in the barn is where Elias’ mother directs him to look. He and I both notice a bullet hole in the wall at this point.

Elias’ mother reveals that he and Lukas used to play with a loaded gun when they were small. As a result, Elias accidentally shot Lukas, which led to a sad disaster.

When the mother tries to get Elias to accept that Lukas was dead, he lashes out at her. She tumbles to the ground below after falling from the barn attic. The hay catches fire as a result of the light she was carrying breaking.

Exist Elias’ mother and brother?

No. Elias is obviously having difficulty distinguishing between truth and illusion, which was something his mother mentioned earlier in her chat with the police.

They are hallucinations when Elias sees them at the conclusion of the film. This suggests that the Lukas we see throughout the film was also a creation of Elias’ fantasy.

If you go back and watch the footage, you’ll see that the mother only speaks to Elias; this shows that Lukas wasn’t really there.

You’ll also observe that Lukas occasionally assumes the form of Elias’ reflection rather than a real, breathing individual.

The shame and anguish Elias had following the death of his sibling led to his delusion. He created a universe where his brother continued to exist as a method to cope with the tragedy that had occurred and the loneliness that he experienced.

The tragedy also explained his mother’s earlier behaviour in the film. Because of her personal sorrow, she was aloof from her son, which most likely led to resentment toward Elias for accidently killing his sibling.

Elias had drawn a picture for her, but she probably tossed it away since she didn’t want to be reminded of her now-shattered family. The film is more of a study of loss and how it can impact us than it is a horror film.
