Synopsis of the movie “Under Her Control”

The plot of the Spanish crime drama “Under Her Control” on Netflix revolves around an unusual arrangement between a worker and her employer.

It explores topics like motherhood, surrogacy, and the exploitation of immigrants. The action is centred around two women.

Beatriz is a role model in her industry, a self-made fashion company owner, and a friendlier version of Miranda Priestly. Sofia is an Argentine immigrant who relocates to Madrid in search of a better future.

She resides with her promising real estate agent partner Nacho. She is an aspirational, goal-oriented young lady who admires Beatriz. She submits an internship application to the tycoon of the fashion industry.

Sofia soon establishes her value after being hired as an assistant at Beatriz’s company and is given a full-time employment.

Although everything seems to be going well, Sofa becomes pregnant soon after beginning her employment. Due to her pregnancy, Sofia has to change all of her plans, putting her dream job in jeopardy.

Why does Sofia decide against getting pregnant?

Sofia, a woman with great potential, worries that having a child will stop her career because her company has not been very understanding of others who need extended absences.

Sofia, a devout Catholic, is thinking about getting an abortion. When she brings it up with a priest, he makes it quite plain that doing so is wrong according to their religion.

On the other hand, Beatriz, her boss, has long been eager to begin a family. In the end, Beatriz makes her an alluring proposition. In exchange for Sofia receiving a promotion, she suggests Beatriz adopt the child. After reflecting for a few days, Sofia accepts the conditions.

What justification does Sofia use to hide her pregnancy from Nacho?

Sofia will live with Beatriz while she is pregnant, as agreed upon by Beatriz and Sofa, who will keep their arrangement a secret from the public. Nacho, her lover and the child’s father, is kept in the dark by Sofia.

After ensuring that she will receive twice what Beatriz originally proposed, she signed the contract. She then informs Nacho that she would be staying in London for six months.

Sofia conceals her pregnancy from him and appears to have no issue lying. Nacho shows his anger and irritation at the circumstance, but he is constrained in what he can do.

Even though Beatriz looks to be a dictator during the entire film, it’s easy to feel sympathy for her.

We learn that she lost a child in the past and that she still keeps practically all of the stuff she bought for the child in a closed room at home.

Given her advanced age, giving birth to a kid will likely be challenging for her. Although Beatriz attempts to use dating apps to find dates, she rarely succeeds. Beatriz still harbours a deep wish to have children.

But because of her desperation, she behaves in a way that makes her the main adversary of the film right away.

Why does Sofia start to second-guess her choice?

Sofia claims that Beatriz manages every aspect of her life on her own. Even if Sofia wanted to, she couldn’t leave the property. Beatriz argues that she is acting in this way for Sofia’s safety and to conceal the pregnancy.

After Sofia convinces Tati, a Vietnamese woman, to open and show her the secret room, Beatriz goes so far as to fire her, further isolating Sofia.

The latter is also conscious of the fact that she is always being monitored by cameras that have been set throughout the house. She quickly begins to regret her choice because her life is now constantly under her boss’s watchful scrutiny.

In addition, Sofia finds that Beatriz has taken her phone. After she talks about it with another woman, Beatriz goes out and buys her a second one, but the phone doesn’t seem to be able to make calls. The power dynamics between these two ladies are overwhelmingly tilted in Beatriz’s favour.

Sofia instantly understands that she needs to postpone her departure until after the birth. Beatriz quickly handles Sofia in an animalistic and robotic manner to the point where Sofia is no longer treated as a person.

Why does Beatriz murder Nacho?

One day, after noticing anything is very out of the ordinary, Nacho rushes into Beatriz’s office and threatens one of the staff members into revealing Beatriz’s home address.

As soon as he steps into Beatriz’s house, his instincts are verified. He begins conversing with Sofia over the door’s security system.

Nacho attempts to call the police, but Beatriz, who has learnt about him in the meanwhile, runs him over with her car, killing him. She then tries to conceal his vehicle and corpse.

Beatriz, has she been murdered?

Finally, Sofia starts to defy Beatriz and retaliate brutally after what happened to Nacho. Beatriz is knocked unconscious, restrained, abused, and Sofia steals her money.

Sofia makes an attempt to run away, but she quickly turns around to get the pet dog Beatriz bought for her. By then, Beatriz has let go of herself.

In the course of their altercation, Sofa cuts Beatriz with golden scissors, resulting in a bloodbath. Although Beatriz’s murder hasn’t been proven because it hasn’t been shown to us, it is most likely to have happened off-screen.

Beatriz’s plea was accepted by Sofia since she thought it would be the best course of action for all parties involved.

But Beatriz’s unrelenting desire to have a child shows itself in her attempts to control and sway every aspect of Sofia’s life. The exact same urge led to Beatriz’s demise.

Does Sofia succeed in escaping?

As Sofia tries to escape with the rest of her money, she feels uncomfortable and her water breaks. She collapses on the ground shortly after, and the picture finishes there with no definitive conclusion.

Due to the fact that she is alone in the bush without a phone to call for assistance, her chances of survival and those of her child are exceedingly small. But there’s always a possibility that a passing vehicle will see her.

It’s up to us to decide Sofia’s future. It is unknown if she will live or die, although either possibility exists. Which of the two you interpret relies largely on whether or not you are an optimist or a pessimist!
