Movie Loving Adults (2022)

A thriller about infidelity with a lot of untapped potential

The Danish crime drama Loving Adults on Netflix, formerly known as “Kaerlighed för voksne,” is based on the novel “Krlighed For Voksne” by Anna Ekberg. The story of Christian and Leonora, a couple bound by an apathetic union, is presented in the film.

They appear to have it all and conduct perfect lives on the outside. This is particularly accurate following their son’s recovery from a serious, protracted illness. But some unresolved issues come to light when Leonora sees her partner with his coworker Xenia at a party.

Barbara Rothenborg’s film

Loving Adults portrays an unhappy marriage in a very unpleasant manner. It looks like “Gone Girl,” but it’s actually nastier.

The pair makes an extraordinary effort to save their crumbling marriage. Christian decides to cheat on Leonora, but she manages to keep him around by hiding details about his background, and as a result, her husband feels compelled to kill her.

Christian makes an attempt to murder Leonora, but his scheme fails, and things go horribly wrong in his life. The events that follow make Leonora and Christian’s relationship even more insane and evil.

Crime love story

Barbara Topse-Rothenborg and the writers deliver the complete opposite of what you may anticipate from a normal love-crime story with great execution.

It develops a gripping story in which the betrayed spouse tries to protect themselves by putting pressure on the unfaithful partner to stay.

When you combine attraction, deception, the emotional pressures of parental obligation, criminality, and a dreary relationship history from years past, you get something unsettling and tough to deal with.

Due to its horrific subject matter, the film is undoubtedly unsuitable for those with weak hearts. As the tale of Christian and Leonora’s difficult marriage unfolds, viewers will undoubtedly question their allegiances and choose sides.

Running is a theme that runs through the entire narrative. You can see the pieces of the movie’s plot fitting together when Leonara dons her scarlet windcheater and starts her runs.

Inspires Christian’s first reckless scheme

She is so obsessed with long runs that it inspires Christian’s first reckless scheme. We notice that he is spontaneous and she is analytical, so they approach things very differently after the scandal is out.

Old rumours surface on a visit to see Leonara’s dearest buddy. Something her friend says strikes a chord with Christian. Leonara has a propensity to offer everything she has to something or nothing at all. It perfectly captures all of the challenges he faces.

The plot of Loving Adults centres on broken marriages and passion crimes, two common subjects in films and television programmes.

Despite having a novel premise, Loving Adults’ plot is not entirely unique. It far too frequently employs clichés like the philandering spouse and the insane, vengeful, and twisted girlfriend.

Divorce and marriage

While tackling topics of divorce and marriage, it also fails to identify and express emotional challenges. Instead, it chooses cheesy drama. Additionally, there is a meaningless, overused plot line regarding Leonora’s formative years.

The literary storytelling technique used in the Netflix thriller gives it a novel-like vibe despite the variable narrator pace.

The plot has the structural integrity of an amoeba, despite the excellent production values and the two main characters’ seeming superiority over the material.

Unexpected twist

An unexpected twist that occurs in the midst of the film should, in theory, increase the tension between the main characters.

On the other hand, no one is willing to openly present themselves and provide the two protagonists with difficulties.

The officers are meant to logically accept the evidence of a couple who are connected to (or at least reside close to) two crime scenes that took place within a short period of time.

The movie has various plot holes, including a big logical leap to believe a nice hotel doesn’t have security cameras all over the place or that the police don’t have access to roadside monitoring systems.

Christian’s financial holdings

The detectives don’t even probe Christian’s financial holdings, in fact! This is only made worse by the incredibly irritating nature of the ending.

The carefully planned moments and the lead couple’s excellent performances carry the movie despite its lacklustre narrative. The performances are excellent all around.

The plot of Loving Adults is fascinating, but it doesn’t work out in the end. Although the plot is undoubtedly engaging, it has some serious problems that are difficult to ignore.

There is a lot of untapped promise in this thriller. Despite having significant problems, Loving Adults is nonetheless enjoyable to watch.
